Safe with Rural rescues

Colour: Blue/Red
Collar: No
Location Found: 10th Street
Age: Mature
Date Found: Thursday, 29 September 2011

Described as a playful boy who loves people. He gets very excited but did not jump up on assessor. He’s happy and affectionate and wanted to tell the world about it by barking a bit when first out, though he soon settled. He does bark in his pen when all the other dogs start up barking and he joins in. One of the pound volunteers showed assessor how this boy loves to run up and over the blocks in the yard (see photo) – he’s a busy boy! His health appears to be excellent, he still has that wobbly puppy fat. He came to the pen gate to greet assessor – he’s always at the pen gate ready to greet any humans willing to give him attention! He allowed a teeth check and full body handling. He comes to a whistle every time while off lead and will sit using a treat, which he takes with a soft mouth. On lead he wasn’t too bad, pulled a little so does need practice. During the “startle test” (squeaky toy) he didn’t startle. He enjoyed playing fetch with the toy, although didn’t want to drop it, he wanted the assessor to chase him, cheeky boy! When walked past the other dog cages on lead he was friendly to all with lots of tail wagging. He had no hackles raised in fear or aggression and no dominance displayed. Overall this boy is a happy and loving pup who adores people and is eager to learn new things. He showed great potential during assessment and may even be good at agility or dog sports. He needs a home where he’s included in a busy family life and where he’ll receive lots of exercise and continuing obedience training

Mia – Female kelpie x, Melbourne, Vic

Update: Mia is in foster care in Melbourne and will be available for adoption soon. She does have an old injury on her leg that required surgery but she is recovering well from that and will be available for adoption soon.

Described as quite a timid girl and, because of this, she prefers to be off doing her own thing rather than hanging around people. Otherwise she is friendly and gentle. Her health appears to be okay – she is very, very underweight. She allowed a teeth check and full body handling although didn’t like her rear paws being handled. She doesn’t appear to have any formal training and on lead she was okay, although pulled occasionally and walked behind and around assessor. During the “startle test” (squeaky toy) she startled. She chased the rope toy but didn’t play with it. When walked past the other dog cages on lead she was timid and when it came time to go back into the pound after her assessment she was hesitant about going in there. Overall this girl needs a good quality diet to gain some condition. She needs full training, including on lead and supervised socialisation with other dogs. She needs a caring and patient owner, someone she can learn to trust

Gemma – Female Kelpie X, Melbourne, Vic *Adopted*

By VicPounds Posted in Adopted, AWDRI Dogs, Victoria (VIC) /

Described as a very timid girl who took some time to relax and know that assessor wasn’t going to hurt her. She’s a very pretty girl with a gentle nature. Once she had enough confidence she accepted a hug and enjoyed a pat. Her health appears to be good but she’s a little underweight. She allowed a teeth check and full body handling although was a bit frightened about it. She sits on command but didn’t appear to know any other commands. On lead she walked quite well. During the “startle test” (umbrella opening) she was frightened but showed no aggression. She wasn’t interested in playing with any of the toys. She was introduced to a Staffy and she growled at her but made no other attempt at aggression. She was also introduced to a female Labrador and she wanted to play – she was very social with the Lab. There were no indications of resource guarding and she displayed no signs of dominance and certainly no aggression. Overall this girl is timid but gentle and would need a kind, calm, consistent owner and she should make for a loyal friend. She appears to be intelligent so shouldn’t be difficult to train using positive reinforcement. She could be rehomed just about anywhere as long as she received a good amount of exercise.

Piper – Female Kelpie X 7 months, Melbourne, Vic

By VicPounds Posted in Adopted, AWDRI Dogs, Victoria (VIC) /

Age: Approx. 7+ months
Height: Approx. 40cm
Location Found: hawthorn Grove
Date Found: Friday, 23 September 2011
Described as scared and timid in the pound, poor girl. She doesn’t jump up on you and keeps her tail between her legs and cowers a lot. She wants to play but seems too unsure. Her health is good and she allowed a teeth check and full body handling, although didn’t like her chest being touched so may have been hit or kicked in that area. She comes when called sometimes and when she comes she sits automatically, but she doesn’t sit on command or stay. On lead she was timid and had to be coaxed out of the pound. During the “startle test” (squeaky toy) she startled easily. She played with the rope toy but seemed unsure about whether she was going to be in trouble. When walked past the other dog cages on lead she was timid, but she wasn’t tested one-on-one with any. Overall this young girl needs a caring, patient and calm owner who can give her training and socialisation to build her confidence

Cassie – Young female Blue Heeler – Melbourne, Vic *Adopted*

By VicPounds Posted in Adopted, AWDRI Dogs, Victoria (VIC) /

Cassie is very sweet, not timid, but shows signs of very limited socialisation. She comes when called with minimum distraction. Walks well on lead, but is unsetteled when walking past a barking dog. I always stop make her sit and calm before moving on. She sits on command, down needs more work and is totally crate trained now, she needs a strong leader to be her owner as she likes to test the boundaries. She is beautiful and I have been very blessed to have her to walk in the mornings, and play with in the afternoons. She does jump up and always tries to rest a paw on you, she would be suited to a teenage family.

Cassie is in foster care in Lang Lang, Vic and is available for adoption. Please complete our questionnaire if you would like to meet her.

Her adoption fee of $300 covers her desexing, vaccination, microchipping, heartworm test and commencement on monthly preventatives.
